Rockabilly Clothing

rockabilly clothingRockabilly clothing is created in the designs popularized by the Rockabilly movement. The name comes from a subculture of the early 1950s. This subculture is now recognized as famous musical trail blazers. The term rockabilly describes the fusion of two types of music: rock and roll and country music referred to as hillbilly music during that time period. Rockabilly clothing emerged in the 1950s and was first made popular in the Southern USA. In 1956, rockabilly became a national phenomenon with the release of songs that were recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins that gained national attention. As these songs got national air play on television and radio, the rockabilly subculture expanded out of the south and to the rest of the country.

Some say the classics never go out of style and the sentiment appears to be true for rockabilly clothing. In the 1960s, the rockabilly culture and rockabilly clothing faded out of style. While there remained a core following, the movement was largely forgotten throughout the next two decades. The subculture experienced a revival in the 1980s and rockabilly clothes were seen again. That revival has continued, in one form or another, to the present day.

Rockabilly clothing remains a staple in the small, but persistent subculture that identifies with the Rockabilly lifestyle. At Bettie Page clothing, we carry rockabilly clothing and rockabilly dresses that offer the opportunity to experience the distinctive fashion of this uniquely American subculture.
